Joining procedure

Due to being inundated with interested people -a situation that we've never had before,  we've had to suspend our membership entry procedure until at least July 2023 to enable us to clear the backlog of probationers. In the meantime, if you are still interested in applying for membership, please contact me using the information on the 'Contact Us' page and I'll keep a record of your email to be ready to send out invitations in mid-2023. You may still visit the range to view our facilities but we won't be taking any applications.

The following info below is the procedure we have to deal with membership requests and is for your information only as a guide but as I've said we will NOT be taking ANY new members until 2023.

N. Collyer
Hon Secretary
Croydon Rifle & Pistol Club

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you are interested in applying for membership please contact us using the information on the 'Contact Us' page. You will then receive an invitation to visit the club and after being shown around, if you decide that you would like to apply for membership, you will be asked to fill in an application form. On it you will also be asked for the names and the private home addresses of two referees (who cannot be your relatives, or whom live at the same address) who are willing to vouch for you, who will be contacted and their details checked by the police. Only on receipt of BOTH referee forms by us by the post, will the details be supplied to the police firearms departments
in the Met. area who will perform their own background & CRB/DBS checks before informing us if you are a fit & proper person to have access to firearms. The police will inform us if there are reasons to refuse membership -though we are not told why.

The checks can take 3 months -or longer at certain periods, and if you are from another country this may take even longer as the UK police will be checking your details with your home country police force so please be patient.

The minimum age for individual membership is 17yrs. for pistol and 12yrs. for target rifle and air weapons provided that the person is of sufficient stature to handle a weapon safely. We especially welcome applications from Cadets, Scout & Guide Association members and other youth organisations.

If you do not hold a firearms certificate the law requires that you complete a probationary period of membership of not less than three months in which time you will receive training in both safety and marksmanship to a required safe standard. This club has a minimum probationary period of six months for non-Firearm Certificate (FAC) holders.

There is a £95 joining fee for all probationary members (which is non-returnable). During your probationary training period all equipment hire & training is free and ammunition & targets are available at low prices from our armoury. Typical prices for .22LR ammunition is £4 to £5 per box of 50 rounds and approx. 10p per target. All ammunition is held at the club under lock & key, unless you have authorisation on your UK FAC to keep at home, and you will be asked to sign a declaration that you have no live rounds on you before leaving the range.

Note that unauthorised removal of live ammunition from the range is a criminal offence and will be reported instantly to the police with no exceptions, as we are required by law to do so. Ammunition can only be possessed by an FAC holder who has that calibre authorised on their Firearms Certificate.

Only when you have satisfactorily completed the probationary period will you be eligible to take up an invitation to become a full member of this club. Upon being accepted as a full member you will be required to pay the rest of your membership fee up to the end of the 31st December (pro-rata).

We welcome applications for membership from current firearm certificate holders and whilst it is club policy that all prospective members serve a period as a probationary member, providing that their safety is of a good standard the same facilities will be available to you as a full member.
